Year 10-11 Commerce students enjoy SELL programme

From March 10 to March 12, seventy-five year 10 and 11 students were involved in the SELL (Student Enterprise Learning Link) programme, which was hosted in the college library.

Over the three days, students formed business groups and developed a range of products, from a translator for parents trying to understand the language of their youngsters - to pens with all kinds of weird and wonderful add-ins - to a key holder that became a universal key by recognising and re-creating the shape of any keys - and many other wonderful ideas.

Our special thanks go out to the facilitators from the Young Enterprise Trust, Ewan McLeod, Caroline Steele, Yolande Rosario and Janet Hunt and especially to the community leaders, Mayor Jenny Brash, MP Hekia Parata, Pacific Business Trust Advisor Maureen Tukaroa-Betham and T J Taotua and Henry Samia, from Partners Porirua, who assisted with judging and encouragement.

The programme was a complete success and students demonstrated their ability to work well in groups, to think on their feet, to adapt to change and, most importantly, to make good decisions and grow in confidence.

Kevin Greig.

XTo the Community from the Board of Trustees

The Board would like to wish everyone in the Aotea community a happy new year and welcome back to what is promising to be an exciting year at the college. We made some very good progress last year towards the shared vision and it was encouraging to see the continued improvement in NCEA results. Well done to all students and staff for their achievements. This year we will continue the 'raising standards' theme and some progress has already been made with a re-organisation of our administration function. We are also planning some improvements to the school environment this year although we never have enough money to do everything we want so please bear with us!
