Aotea College

Whanau Advisory Group (WAG)

The Aotea College Whanau Advisory Group is a collective of Students, Parents/Board of Trustees representatives, teachers and Senior Leadership members of the College. Its aim is to provide advice and guidance to the college and community in assisting them to;

  • Foster quality engagement between the school and its Maori community in order to raise Maori student achievements
  • Improve the wellbeing of Maori students by building safe, supportive, inclusive communication between school management and Maori students within the school
  • The Aotea College Whanau Advisory Group was formed in June 2010. One of its first tasks was to gain some understanding from the schools Maori student community, about what it was that their school could do for them. Alongside the Ministry of Education a survey of 186 students who identified as Maori, was conducted. The feedback from this survey provided WAG with information enabling it to implement events and strategies towards addressing some of the common themes/issues in the feedback.

    Since then the WAG initiative continues to be active and currently retains 11 members. The group meet every second Tuesday of each month. Sometimes due to clashes with other school events this may change and is advised in Te Karere - the schools community newsletter. Also in Te Karere upcoming WAG events will be advertised.
