Information for International Students

Aotea College’s Shared Vision - is based on these attributes:

Achieve through Opportunity Tolerance Effort and A ttitude

Introduction

Opened in 1978 and situated in Porirua City, Aotea College is a multi-cultural school with over 980 Year 9 to 13 level students aged from 13 to 18 years. It is a government co-educational secondary school.  It is located 20 kms to the north of the Wellington metropolitan area, which is located at the southern end of the North Island.  Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand.

The school encourages and assists each student to achieve personal excellence - intellectual, physical and social.

The school has welcomed several private students from Asia, Europe and South America together with many students from around the world on cultural exchange programmes.  The presence of these students in Aotea College is welcomed as the school cherishes diversity.  In recent years, Aotea College has enrolled international students from China, Japan, Thailand, Laos, South Korea, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Belgium, Germany, Slovakia, France, Italy, Finland, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, Canada and the USA.

Because several of its resident New Zealand students come from the Asia-Pacific region, Aotea College has special strengths in its English language programmes for speakers of other languages.

The number of international students at Aotea College varies between 10 and 25. Because of this, Aotea College students and teachers hold international students in high regard. International students here find mixing with New Zealand students much easier than in those schools that have a large number of international students.

Aotea College follows the curriculum and examinations prescribed by the Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.

Aotea College offers an extensive curriculum that prepares students for university, polytechnic and other forms of tertiary education training.  After completing their secondary school education, many students from Aotea College enrol at nearby tertiary educational institutions including the Victoria University of Wellington, Massey University (both the Palmerston North and Wellington campuses), Whitireia Community Polytechnic and Weltec. Other students, of course, enrol at universities and polytechnics elsewhere throughout New Zealand.

The school has a strong emphasis on all students fully utilising their talents, developing new skills and participating in new experiences.
