Things you need to know about Aotea College

Aotea College is a state, co-educational school set on a hill high above the Porirua harbour.

The college has specialist facilities for Science, Drama, Music, Physical Education, Art, Computing and English for Speakers of Other Languages.

Set in 14 hectares of grounds, the college has its own rugby, football, netbal, tennisl and cricket facilities and a gymnasium.

The school day starts at 8.45 am and finishes at 3.20 pm.  We operate 5 x 1 hour periods a day with interval after period 2 and lunch after period 4.  We run a 5 day timetable and Wednesday starts at 9.45 am to allow for staff professional development.

A free school clinic, staffed by a Nurse and Doctor is available to the college’s students, three mornings a week.  Appointments are made through the office.   When the clinic isn’t open, trained First Aid staff help with emergencies.

Buses run to and from the college every day.  Detailed information is available from the college office or Mana Coach Services.

There is a canteen that sells snacks and lunches.

The college also manages the Porirua Activity Centre, which is housed in Te Wananga o Aotearoa.

The college operates an enrolment scheme that limits the size of the school to 960 and the Year 9 intake to 225.

Recent and upcoming developments

A new shared vision agreed to by staff, Board of Trustees and community stakeholders.

The process of upgrading the Administration facilities is ongoing.

Rights and responsibilities of Students and Teachers

Most ‘rules’ in the college are in place to ensure the safety of the students and staff.  This includes not leaving the college site during the school day without a pass.  We rely on all members of the college community treating each other with respect and working together.

We expect students to wear correct uniform, to respect other students and staff, to show courtesy towards each other and to respect their school environment.

School regulations can be summarised as consideration for others and safety at all times.
