Science Course Outline

Science Level 1

This course aims to develop:

  • The ability to problem-solve and apply ideas to new situations.
  • Basic practical skills needed for Science.
  • A greater understanding of our physical, material and biological environment.
  • An understanding of the importance and relevance of Science in the world around us.
  • Success in NCEA Level 1 Science assessments.
  • Effective, enthusiastic, and independent learning.

Science Level 2

This course aims to develop:

  • A knowledge of the basic facts and an understanding of the key ideas of Science.
  • An understanding of how Science and Science based applications impact on society and are influenced by the needs and attitudes of people.
  • The ability to problem solve, apply ideas to new situations and to communicate sensibly about science.
  • Confidence and skills with the tools of science ( i.e. equipment, procedures, mathematics and language).
  • Students that are effective, enthusiastic and independent learners who are able to work co-operatively and effectively.

Science Level 3

This course aims to develop:

  • A knowledge of the basic facts and an understanding of the key ideas of Science
  • An understanding of how Science and Science based applications impact on society and are influenced by the needs and attitudes of people.
  • The ability to problem solve, apply ideas to new situations and to communicate sensibly about science.
  • Basic practical skills integral to Science.
  • Confidence and skills with the tools of science ( i.e. equipment, procedures, mathematics and language)
  • Students that are effective, enthusiastic and independent learners who are able to work co-operatively and effectively.

Science Unit Standard

This course aims to develop:

  • Your basic science skills.
  • Acquire a body of basic scientific knowledge and an understanding of some important scientific ideas.
  • Develop basic experimental and investigative abilities.
  • Recognise the difference between scientific and non-scientific ideas and explanations.
  • Develop a basic understanding of some of the important technological and environmental applications of science and of the economic, ethical and social implications of these.
